What Are Vegan Cannabis Gummies?
Cannabis-infused gummies rank among the most favoured forms of cannabis edibles. Available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and flavours, they offer precise amounts of cannabinoids and terpenes.
Those made with a Jello type product and gelatin are not vegan, whereas these are gummies made with Agar Agar and are vegan and yummy!
Ingredients
- ½ cup fruit juice – Any favourite variety will work. Make sure it is proper fruit juice and not a fruit juice drink. Mango is my favourite as it is very sweet and strongly flavoured.
- ½ cup infused coconut oil – This adds the necessary cannabis as a CBD oil or a THC oil. If you want to make them more potent, you can infuse the oil twice. Here’s a free recipe for how to make DIY Cannabis Oil.
- 2 teaspoons agar-agar powder – Agar powder is essential; avoid using flakes for the best results. (*Check the price on Amazon)
- 1–2 tablespoons sweetener (optional) – Adjust based on personal taste preferences. Make a note of what you used and how much so you can do the same next time, or change the amount.
- Food colouring (optional) – This can enhance the visual appeal. I like to mess around with this like have blue coloured mango flavour.
Equipment
The first thing to do is decarboxylate the cannabis. This can take a couple of hours, so plan in advance. You then also need to infuse the decarbed weed into the coconut oil. I use the POT by NOIDS for both as it is so accurate and easy to use.
- POT by NOIDS Herb Cooker (optional) – Simply THE BEST machine in my opinion and well worth the investment. This is to decarboxylate my cannabis and then make cannabis-infused oil. It’s so versatile that I can also use it to make cannabis tincture and save the alcohol.
- Gummy bear mould – Bears are the classic shape but there are so many to choose from – just make sure they are silicone. Small silicone molds are hard to remove gummies from, so I prefer larger shapes like cannabis leaves or wiggly designs.
- Pipette or dropper – Essential for pouring the mixture into the mould precisely. This may well be supplied with the silicon mould you buy. It needs to be quite a fat dropper as the gummy recipe is thick.
- Saucepan – Needed for mixing and heating the ingredients.
- Silicone Spatula or flat whisk – Ideal for stirring the mixture thoroughly.
- Cheesecloth – Only if you are not lucky enough to have a POT by NOIDS.
- Bowl – Where the oil will be collected after straining.
Instructions
Here are 2 ways to infuse the oil.
With POT by NOIDS:
- Decarboxylate Herbs: I place the ground herbs in the cooker and activate the decarb function. This can be for CBD or THC.
- Infuse: After decarboxylation, I add coconut oil and use the oil infusion function. This can be for CBD or THC.
- Strain: Once cooled, I use the PBN plunger to extract the oil.
Without POT by NOIDS:
- Decarboxylate Herbs: Preheat your oven to 110°C (230°F). Loosely cover with a low tent of aluminium foil, then bake the ground herbs for 30–40 minutes.
- Melt Butter: In a saucepan, warm the coconut oil over low heat.
- Add Herbs: Mix in the decarboxylated herbs and let them simmer for 2–3 hours.
- Strain: After cooling, strain through cheesecloth into a bowl.
The oven method is not as efficient as using the POT by NOIDS is. People say that you can lose up to 30% of your potency doing it in the oven. Treat yourself to a POT by NOIDS!
Making the Gummies
There are a few key steps to making a good gummy mixture;
- Mix Ingredients: In the saucepan, I combine fruit juice, agar-agar, sweetener, and any food colouring. I stir it slowly to ensure even distribution and don’t splash it up the sides of the saucepan.
- Heat Mixture: I bring the mixture to a boil and as soon as it starts to roll, I reduce the heat to simmer.
- Add Oil: Next, I incorporate the infused coconut oil and allow it to simmer for an additional 5 minutes while stirring consistently. I make sure I keep stirring to make sure nothing burns.
- Pour into Moulds: Once slightly cooled, I start using a dropper to fill the gummy moulds accurately. I’m usually quick about this stage and if the gummy mixture gets too thick, I can gently warm it up again.
- Set Gummies: Finally, I refrigerate the moulds for about 20 minutes to allow the gummies to set and firm up.
Tips for Making Cannabis Gummies
It’s very easy to forget to make notes of what you have done. If you know the strain of weed you have used, go online and get the average range of CBD and THC expected in the plant. I don’t have expensive equipment to measure this, but it’s a good starting point.
- Monitor Potency: Using a potency calculator helps to determine the correct dosage. The people at POT by NOIDS have a great free calculator here.
- Watch Your Dose: I typically aim for a strength of 2.5–5mg per gummy.
- Flavour Variations: I experiment with different fruit juices for different flavours. Asian supermarkets are a good place to look for flavours like lychee and dragon fruit. Make sure they are proper juices though, and not fruit flavoured drinks.
- Adjust Firmness: If you prefer firmer gummies, add extra agar-agar next time you make them.
- Proper Storage: I store the finished gummies in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they can last for up to 5 days. If I place them separately on silicon paper, they will also freeze for much longer, but let them thaw out in the fridge before you eat them.
FAQ
How Do I Determine the Potency of My Gummies?
To understand the potency of your weed gummies, you will need to know the concentration of THC or CBD in your cannabis product. The general formula involves calculating the total milligrams of cannabis in your infused oil and then dividing it by the number of gummies you intend to make. This will give you an approximate dosage per gummy, ensuring you can enjoy them responsibly.
Can I Use Store-Bought Cannabis Oil for Making Gummies?
Yes, you can absolutely use store-bought cannabis oil. Just ensure it is labelled for edible use and that you understand its potency.
Final Thoughts
Making vegan cannabis gummies is a great way to use up an afternoon. The gummies are a really handy way to know the effect you are going to get, and they are easy to carry around in a small sweetie tin.
